Mgimwa’s son poised to win Kalenga poll under CCM.

The race to fill the position left vacant by the late Kalenga MP who was also Minister of Finance Dr William Mgimwa has started in which his son Godfrey (32), has been elected by CCM members in the constituency to contest for the post.

Dr Mgimwa passed away last month in South Africa where he was undergoing medical treatment. Mr Godfrey now awaits approval from the party’s top organ to become CCM flag bearer in the by-election to replace his father.
A banker by profession just like his father, Godfrey beat eight other contenders to represent the party in the by-election slated for March 16, this year.
Mgimwa Junior scooped 348 votes and he was followed by Tigo’s Zonal Manager for the Southern Highlands Jackson Kiswaga who got 170 votes, according to the supervisor of the election Joseph Muhumba.
A total of 708 out of 816 members of CCM’s general assembly Kalenga constituency met here over the weekend at the Mwembetogwa Secondary School in which they voted the late Mgimwa’s son to contest as an area MP.
Other contestants that were vying to become CCM flag bearers and the number of votes they got in brackets include Thomas Mwikuka (2), Edward Mtakimo (3), Bryson Kalinga (7), William Pangamila (8) and Peter Mtisi (33).
Not even the Pangani District Commissioner Hafsa Mtasiwa could beat Mgimwa Junior in the race as she polled only 42 votes while Eng. Gabriel Kalinga got 90 votes. Before the votes, it was predicted that it would have been a tight race between Kiswaga, Mtasiwa and Kalinga.
Mr Godfrey Mgimwa attended his tertiary education in the UK before he returned in 2010 and employed by Stanbic Bank. The Permanent Voter Register which was used during the last General Election in 2010 shows that there are about 85,000 voters in the constituency.
